Your toilet training pants questions, answered
Toilet training pants are thicker and more absorbent, making them ideal for the early stages of toilet training when accidents are bigger and more frequent. Training underwear are thinner and feel much more like real undies, suited for toddlers who are further along and having smaller accidents. Most families start with training pants and move to training underwear as confidence builds.
Rudie Baby training pants come in Small (5-13 kg), Medium (13-18 kg), and Large (18-25 kg). We recommend choosing by weight rather than age, as toddlers vary a lot. If your child sits between sizes, size up for a comfortable fit and easier pull-up and pull-down.
The feel-wet liner is the key. Unlike a nappy that wicks moisture away and keeps your child dry, training pants let them feel the wetness of an accident. That sensation helps toddlers make the connection between the feeling of needing to go and what happens when they don't get to the toilet in time. Combined with the pull-up fit they can manage themselves, it builds both awareness and independence.
The V1 Original Cotton is our classic option β soft, durable, and great for everyday use. The V2 Bamboo Terry is softer and more breathable, making it a good choice if your child has sensitive skin or you live somewhere warm. Both are machine washable and built to last through the whole training journey.
Most families find 5 to 8 pairs is a practical number during active toilet training. That gives you enough to rotate through the day while pairs are in the wash. Our bundles let you save when buying in packs, and you can mix prints and sizes on the Build Your Own Bundle page.
Machine wash in cold or warm water and tumble dry on low or line dry. If there is solid waste, rinse in cold water first before washing. Avoid fabric softeners as they coat the absorbent fibres over time and reduce how well they work.
Yes, for most families. A set of reusable training pants can replace hundreds of disposable pull-ups across the toilet training period. They wash easily, hold up through repeated use, and cut down significantly on waste. The upfront cost is higher but the overall spend is typically much lower by the end of toilet training.
