Your toilet training questions, answered
Most children show signs of readiness between two and three years old. Look for things like staying dry for two or more hours, showing interest in the toilet, and being able to follow simple instructions. Readiness matters more than age. Starting too early usually takes longer overall.
Training pants are thicker and more absorbent, better suited for the early stages when accidents are bigger and more frequent. Training underwear are thinner and feel much closer to real undies, suited for toddlers who are further along. Most families start with training pants and move to underwear as confidence builds.
A standard mattress protector sits under the fitted sheet and is slow to get to in a 2am accident. Our leakproof fitted sheet goes directly on the mattress under your regular sheet, so an accident means one quick sheet change rather than a full strip of the bed. Most parents with both say they wish they had got the fitted sheet sooner.
Most families find five to eight pairs is enough to rotate through the day while others are in the wash. During active toilet training you can expect multiple changes a day, so having enough pairs to get through without doing laundry every night makes the whole process less stressful.
For most families, yes. A set of reusable training pants can replace hundreds of disposable pull-ups over the course of toilet training. They wash easily, hold up through repeated use, and the overall spend is typically much lower by the end of training. The eco benefit is a bonus.
Rudie Baby training pants and underwear come in Small (5-13 kg), Medium (13-18 kg), and Large (18-25 kg). We recommend sizing by weight rather than age. If your child sits between sizes, size up for a comfortable fit and easier pull-up and pull-down.
